"We're Here for You"

A Sad Farewell...

In the early hours of December 17th, we lost our beloved Carole, quite unexpectedly.   She was surrounded by her "girls" and her son David, whom she loved with all her heart.  Our church family has lost one of its brightest lights. She was one of a kind and will sorely be missed by all.

God Bless you and keep you Carole. Your beautiful spirit and smile will always be in our hearts.

~Love...Your Grace Church Family ~

I Remember

by Carole Lassandro Sullivan

~ Our Junior Choir (pictured l to r) Carole Lassandro Sullivan, Virginia Gray, Muriel Naversen Bates, Natalie Tillinghast Avery and Beryl Ulmer, wore longed sleeved smocks of white, with blue beanie hats.   Our organist was a lovely lady named Miss Thomas. We had a Church outing to Rye Playland, chaperoned by Harriet Hawkins Reynolds and Ruby Dill (the Kindergarten teacher from P.S. 17.)

~  Sunday School in the Memorial Room (now CITG) with a long table and small chairs.  An Altar with a gold cross.  My age, 5 years.

~  Christmas as a child and Santa sitting on the stage (Mr. Atral was Santa.)  We received a box of hard candy.  I also remember playing Mary in the Christmas Pagent in the Church.

~  My Confirmation, May 1943.  The Rev. Lestor Martin Was our Pastor.

~  A play with Rev. Martin and members of the Vestry and church.  They played children in a classroom and all the men wore short pants, (in those days, men did not wear shorts!)

~  My Mom belonged to the Earnest Workers and she and some of the other ladies would sew aprons to sell at the Christmas Fair.

~  The arrival of Fr. Joseph Hall and his bride Elsa.  They opened up their hearts and home to the teen of the parish.  We joined the EYPF (Episcopal Young People's Fellowship) and held meetings in the hall.  Afterwards, we played ping-pong and badminton.  We helped with Sunday School, made rag dolls to be sold at the Christmas Fair, and helped with waitressing at church dinners.  It was a great loss, we felt, when Fr. and Mrs. Hall left, and unfortunately, I believe not a decision of their own choosing.

My brother, Thomas Lassandro, Altar Boy, (circa 1945)

~  The Rectory was renovated to accommodate The Rev. and Mrs. Coleman's four children.  Their warmth and love will always be remembered, especially by my family after the passing of my mother in 1949.

October 1949 - The 100th Anniversary of Grace Episcopal Church, with dinner and dancing at Ryan's Restuarant.

The Boys (seated l to r) Bill Newman, Carl Olsen, Tom Lassandro, Malcolm Milligan, Warren Billings, Bob Stumpf, Alex Becker, John Hinck, Fred Beulow, Louie LeMay and Donald Coleman.

The Girls (seated l to r) I can name some of the girls...maybe someone can fill in the blanks?  Patty Warren, Geraldine Wiehe, ?,?, Vivian Dahlgren, Judy Wiehe, Carol Gauss, Laura Klobe, Sonia Grevesmugl and Helen Martin.

~  I remember my marriage and attending Grace Church up until the birth of my first born daughter, then raising five children in another church, but never willing or wanting to leave my church spiritually.  Then after 35 years, I too, like so many came home again.
